The $36.5 million construction project to improve Route 13 (Bristol Pike) continues in Bristol Borough and Bristol Township with additional restrictions beginning on April 17. PennDOT's construction will enhance travel and safety along a 4.3-mile stretch of Bristol Pike by rehabilitating pavement, rebuilding bridges, replacing drainage facilities, building pedestrian walkways, installing medians, reducing speed limits and more, according to a website dedicated to the updates on the project. Several accidents were reported around Lower Bucks County during Monday night's small snow system.
A fast-moving winter weather system may be to blame fore several accidents on numerous local roads Monday evening. Snow started to fall around the region shortly after dark in Bucks County and ended up dropping an inch in Feasterville, according to the National Weather Service’s Mount Holly, N.J. office. With the snow came several vehicle crashes. Just after 8 p.m., crews responded to South Flowers Mill Road and East Lincoln Highway in Middletown where a van was reported to have flipped on its side. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced that all driver license and photo centers will be closed Saturday, Jan. 19, through Monday, Jan. 21, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Customers may still obtain a variety of driver and vehicle products and services online through PennDOT's Driver and Vehicle Services website. There will be lane restrictions in Middletown Township while PennDOT works on a bridge beam removal early this week.
As part of the $19.3 million project to reconstruct the Rt. 1 Bridge over Rt. 213 and the ramps at the Rt. 1/Rt. 213 Interchange in Middletown Township lane restrictions are scheduled on Rt. 1 and Rt. 213 for bridge beam removal. From 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7 to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, southbound Rt. 1 motorists will see lane closures between Bellevue Avenue and I-95. PennDOT and police statewide are joining forces for “Operation Safe Holiday,” an initiative including seat-belt, aggressive-driving and impaired-driving enforcement aimed at keeping roadways safe this holiday season. The operation is under way, beginning with statewide Click It or Ticket seat-belt enforcement. Through the New Year, police will also use sobriety checkpoints, roving patrols and regular traffic safety patrols to crack down on motorists who are speeding, driving aggressively or driving while impaired by drugs or alcohol. “Every year we see an increase in travel during the holiday season, and unfortunately we also see more crashes,” PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Governor Tom Corbett recently announced that PennDOT is launching two voluntary programs aimed at saving the lives of Pennsylvanians in emergency situations – the Yellow Dot and Emergency Contact Information programs. "Both of these programs speak for people when they can't speak for themselves, so medical concerns can be addressed and contacts can be reached as quickly as possible," Corbett said. "When someone is in a crash or they find themselves in an emergency situation, it's critical that emergency responders quickly find out as much as they can about the victim." PennDOT announced Monday that several state highways, including I-95, I-476 and I-76, would be closed to all non-emergency vehicles until 2 a.m. Tuesday morning in response to Hurricane Sandy. The transportation department closed "the full length of Interstates 95 and 676; I-476 (non-toll portion); I-76 from the Pa. Turnpike to Passyunk Avenue and the U.S. Route 1 Extension in Philadelphia to all traffic except emergency vehicles," according to a release. The PA turnpike remains open. Before the closing, all area highways were placed under a 45 mph speed restriction. Due to the dangerous wind speeds associated with Hurricane Sandy, beginning at 10 a.m. Monday, the PennDOT and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission will temporarily reduce the speed limit to 45 mph and restrict certain types of vehicles on some southeast Pennsylvania roadways.
