Runners are being encouraged to bring as little as possible with them this year.
Following the backpack bombings at the Boston Marathon two weeks ago, runners in this year's Broad Street Run in Philadelphia won't be able to tote their gear in a backpack, race organizers announced in a mass email to participants Monday. Taking a page from the Transportation Safety Administration's playbook, race organizers are mandating runners use clear plastic drawstring bags, which will be handed out at the expo Friday and Saturday, to stow their gear this year. “You are strongly encouraged to bring as little as possible with you to the start of the race,” race organizers said in the email to runners. “All items brought into the start area are subject to search and/or confiscation.” Race organizers only indicated backpacks would be …

Council Rock South grad Justin Pugh selected as the 19th pick of the NFL Draft on Thursday.
Justin Pugh, a lineman from Syracuse, has been drafted by the New York Giants. Pugh, a Council Rock South graduate, was the 19th pick in the NFL draft. "He’s a terrific football player—big, smart, high test scores and a team captain,” General Manager Jerry Reese said of Pugh, quoted in a New York Times article. “He’s our type of guy—clean. No warts, no off-field issues and a good athlete. He’s a solid football player, and I think you win with solid football players.” Pugh is a 6-foot-6-inch offensive tackle from Northampton Township. He decided to forgo his final season at Syracuse and enter the NFL draft, the Syracuse Post Standard reported earlier this year. Pugh posted his decision to enter the draft on Twitter in January. Yankees farm team returns for another exciting season.
Through the first week of the season the Trenton Thunder have shown their bats can explode on their Eastern League rivals. Starting tomorrow the team will be back at Arm & Hammer Park for their first home action of the new year So far this year the Thunder have played three games against the Portland Sea Dogs and three games against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on the road. The local team started the season with a 13-5 win over the Sea Dogs last Thursday and also picked up wins on Sunday and Tuesday. The action returns to Mercer County Thursday night with a game against the Richmond Flying Squirrels. The first 3000 fans 6 and over who come out to the 7:05 game on Thursday, April 11 will also get an Arm & Hammer Park Logo baseball. It is …

The Bucks County Soapbox Derby asked permission from township supervisors to host a rally race in April on the road running behind Lower Southampton Elementary School.
There could be a day at the races in Lower Southampton next month, if organizers from the Bucks County Soapbox Derby can smooth out all the details with the township. The board of supervisors granted approval last week to rally director John Marion to hold the race on School Lane on either April 27 or 28. The greenlight was contingent on Marion and his team coordinating all the preparations with township manager John McMenamin, including the set-up of an escrow account to guarantee post-race clean up. Marion told the board he expects anywhere between 60-80 people to attend the event, with at least 30 racers and their families. The sides of the street will be lined with bales of hay for the drivers' safety, but all activity can be halted …

The Philadelphia Eagles announced Friday that they will no longer hold training camp at Lehigh University.
The Philadelphia Eagles are flying the Lehigh Valley coop. After 17 years, training camp will no longer be held at Lehigh University, the team announced on its website Friday. "There are so many people at Lehigh University who went above and beyond to accommodate us and to make Training Camp a special place for fans to travel each summer to get an up-close look at the team," Team President Don Smolenski said. "The city of Bethlehem has been part of our lives every summer for the past 17 years," Smolenski added. The ruling takes effect this fall for Philadelphia-area Catholic Youth Organization teams, the archdiocese announced Thursday.
Philadelphia Archbishop Charles J. Chaput has directed the archdiocese's Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) football league to begin allowing girls to play, the archdiocese announced Thursday. The league previously had a written policy to exclude girls from full-contact sports. Most people on a panel that recently studied the issue at Chaput's direction recommended preserving the policy, but Chaput decided otherwise, according to the archdiocese's announcement. An 11-year-old Bucks County girl played last fall before archdiocese officials told her she couldn't anymore. Feasterville Business Association is accepting nominations for the annual award until April 1.
That time of year has come for student-athletes to apply for the Feasterville Business Association's Eric Hanson Memorial Scholarship Award. The form needs to be completed and submitted to the FBA by April 1, along with copy of a school transcript showing first semester grades and class rank and three letters of recommendation (one from a coach, teacher and another noon-relative). The FBA hands out three monetary awards of at least $500 to each recipient that meet the criteria. The winners will be announced by the FBA in May and also receive a certificate of recognition and a plaque.
