Seniors to Graduate On Time but Short on Days at Neshaminy

Neshaminy School Board officials decide to keep graduation on June 12 despite being short on class days due to Hurricane Sandy.

Hurricane Sandy tore through our area Oct. 29 and shut down facilities and schools for a week.

Those are school days students normally have to make but, but Neshaminy School Board decided Tuesday to let seniors graduate as planned on June 12 even though the seniors fell short of the state-required 180 days of classes, Phillyburbs reports.

In December, the board announced that the last day of school for students would be June 21. It was originally scheduled for June 20. Students also had to be be in school March 6 and on June 20, which were supposed to be staff development days.

This was a bit of a turnaround; the board was going to move graduation to later in the month, but parents and students complained that that would interfere with the traditional “senior week” after graduation.

Phillyburbs reports that missing the 180-day mandate could put $20,000 of state funding the district receives in jeopardy.
