Neshaminy Mascot Saga Continues

The Philadelphia Inquirer took on the issue in a recent editorial.

The ongoing debate about whether Nashaminy High School students should continue to call themselves the Redskins got some extra publicity over the weekend when The Philadelphia Inquirer took on the issue in an editorial.

In a nutshell, the issue is this: A majority of student editors of Neshaminy’s Playwickian decided that the name Redskins is derogatory, writing in an editorial, "If racist institutions had remained in other areas of society simply because they were time-honored traditions, America would be a vastly different place."

In its editorial, The Inquirer praised the students’ decision, saying, “These are the sorts of decisions editors make, and the Playwickian's editors made theirs with precocious skill and evenhandedness.”

The school’s principal, Dr. Robert McGee, has asked the paper to reverse its policy; The Inquirer sided with the students, saying “that and other editorial decisions should be up to the student editors.”
