State: Holidays Are Good Time to Review Insurance Needs

When you buy or receive expensive gifts such as jewelry or electronics, it is a good idea to make sure they are properly covered.

The holiday season is an ideal time for Pennsylvanians to review homeowner insurance policies and take steps to prevent holiday mishaps or tragedies, Insurance Commissioner Mike Consedine said today.

“Insurance companies see claims spike during this time of year, so take time to review your insurance coverage before your holiday celebration begins,” Consedine said in a release. “When hosting a party, make sure your insurance policy, and that of your caterer, carries enough liability coverage to meet the medical and legal expenses of your guests if they are injured at your home or as they are going home.”

Most policies provide some coverage for claims arising from injuries that happen in a home, but not all policies cover alcohol-related liability claims. However, it may be possible to purchase coverage for special events such as a large holiday party.

“You may want to consider buying additional insurance coverage through a floater or an endorsement to your policy,” said Consedine. “Floaters are for items that are moved from one location to another, covering losses wherever they occur.”
