PennDOT Starting $1M Traffic Signal Project in Lower Southampton

The project is designed to enhance travel on Bustleton Pike, Bridgetown Pike and Route 132 (Street Road) in Lower Southampton Township, PennDOT said.

The following was provided to Patch:

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced that construction will begin Monday (March 10) on a $1 million project to install a new traffic signal system to enhance travel on Bustleton Pike, Bridgetown Pike and Route 132 (Street Road) in Lower Southampton Township, Bucks County.

“The installation of this new, computerized closed-loop traffic signal system will improve travel and reduce congestion for the thousands of motorists who drive on these three key corridors each day,” PennDOT District Executive Lester C. Toaso said.

PennDOT’s contractor will install the new traffic signal system on Bustleton Pike from Woodland Road to Bridgetown Pike; Bridgetown Pike from Bustleton Pike to Old Bristol Road; and Route 132 (Street Road) from Central Avenue to Stump Road.

As part of this project, nine traffic signals will be upgraded and a new traffic signal will be installed at the intersection of Bridgetown Pike and Elmwood Avenue. The eastbound approach on Bridgetown Pike at Buck Road will also be widened.

Interconnecting traffic signals with this computerized system will give Lower Southampton Township greater control of its signals and allow it to change the timing of signals depending on traffic conditions. The new signal system will tie into a computer controlled by the township.

The upcoming work schedule is:

• Monday (March 10) through March 29, Bustleton Pike will be restricted weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. between Woodland Road and Bridgetown Pike in Lower Southampton and Northampton townships;
• Monday (March 10) through March 29, Bridgetown Pike will be restricted weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. between Bustleton Pike and Old Bristol Road in Lower Southampton and Northampton townships; and
• Monday (March 10) through March 29, Route 132 (Street Road) will be restricted weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. between Stump Road and Central Avenue in Lower Southampton and Northampton townships.

Armour & Sons, Inc., of Langhorne, Bucks County, is the general contractor on the $1,095,198 project that is financed with 100 percent federal funds. The project is expected to finish in March 2015.
