Board of Supervisors Approves Stump Road Repairs

Last night the board approved emergency repairs to Stump Road.

The Board of Supervisors selected D.J. Pinciotti Construction, of Ivyland, to perform emergency repair work to , which was damaged during the recent .

Four contractors bid to get the job to perform the emergency repair work on two sections of the road, but Pinciotti Construction came in the cheapest at $11,720.

“What you are seeing there is a brand new road that is being washed away,” said Township Manager Ted Taylor as he displayed an image of the damage to the roadway.

The repair work will require crews to work on the headwalls, install rip rap and repair the edge of the blacktop.

The rip rap will be fortified by concrete, and will replace dirt and vegetation that was washed away during the recent flooding, said Township Engineer Wayne Kiefer.

Supervisor Ed Shannon asked if there was an assurance the road, which was reconstructed last year, won’t be damaged in the next big storm.

Kiefer said that Stump Road, which lies on the border of Lower and Upper Southampton, will remain a continuous maintenance concern due to the fact that water naturally collects in that area.

FEMA officials did survey the damage to the road after Hurricane Irene and have yet to notify the township whether emergency relief funds could be used to pay for the work. If not, Taylor said, the township will foot the bill.
