Troopers to Report Teen Driving Incidents to Parents

When teen drivers crash or get tickets, state police tell their parents.

“Operation Safe Teen” is a safety initiative instituted by the Pa. State Police at Troop M (, Lehigh and Northampton counties) to inform parents and guardians of traffic violations committed by 16-17-year-old drivers, which result in a traffic citation, written warning or vehicle crash that was handled by state police.

According to a release, in June troopers throughout Troop M’s territory made 25 contacts with young teen drivers, resulting in 21 telephone calls and four in-person notifications to parents. Troopers issued seven traffic citations and one written warning associated with vehicle crashes as well as 24 citations and two warnings related to various moving/equipment violations.

According to police, the majority of citations were issued for speeding or other aggressive driving violations.

“The State Police at Troop M hope that by publicizing this information, teen-aged drivers will be more aware of the consequences of their driving behavior, knowing that their parents will be notified of any State Police contacts,” said Lt. James Raykovitz, Troop M patrol commander. “We also hope that parents will take advantage of the opportunity to talk to their teenage driver about their contact with State Police and to reinforce the importance of safe driving practices.”
