Lower Southampton Fire Dept. Finds Submerged Vehicle During Training

The Lower Southampton Fire Department discovered a vehicle submerged in Levittown Lake during training October 15.

During training on Levittown Lake, the 's Marine 6 discovered a submerged vehicle.

Marine 6, equipped with side-scan sonar, scanned the lake. According to LSFD Assistant Chief Stephen Brookes, this is a sonar device that is towed from the boat emits sound pulses, which produce images of the bottom of the lake and objects that may be present there.

While the boat crew practiced with the side-scan sonar, new divers practiced tendered search patterns in a shore based operation, Brookes said. During this exercise, the side-scan sonar picked up up an image believed to be a vehicle lying upside down in about 20 feet of water. Diver search patterns over this area, revealed there was a submerged vehicle located approximately 125 feet from shore.

Brookes said the car was removed from the water and searched by Tullytown Police; it was discovered that this vehicle was reported stolen about a year ago. Levittown Fairless Hills Rescue Squad stood by during this operation and Penndel towing assisted with removing the vehicle from the water.
