Preparing for Hurricane Irene in Lower Southampton

The township offers tips ahead of Hurricane Irene.

With Hurricane Irene on its way to the Lower Southampton area, the township is offering preparedness tips.

If you experience any electrical, natural gas, structural or medical emergences, the township is advising to dial 911. In addition, if you are forced from your residence due to any of the previously stated emergencies dial 911.

To prepare for the storm, ensure that you have the following:

  • A battery operated radio to monitor local radio stations for storm updates 
  • Basic non-perishable food supplies, only what is necessary so there is enough for all occupants. 

Secure or move inside all items on your property that are not structural objects since they will become projectiles in the high wind conditions.

When the storm does hit the area, the township recommends remaining indoors at all times unless it is necessary to evacuate your residence.

If you must leave your residence to evacuate due to emergency conditions, the township advises to stay away from all down power lines and to assume all are live; do not drive through any flooded areas since the road may be eroded away, also it only takes a few inches of water to sweep away a person and/or a vehicle.

If and when it becomes necessary, the township will open an emergency shelter at the  on Irving Avenue, according to township Manager Ted Taylor.
