Here are your five things for December 23, 2011.

1. According to Weather.com, there will be rain showers early with some sunshine later today and a high of 49 degrees. Overnight, there will be a mostly clear sky with a low of 31 degrees.

2. December 23 is National Pfeffernuesse Day. According to TheNibble.com, Pfeffernüsse, which means “pepper nuts,” are hard, spicy cookies, often dunked in wine during a visit. The “nuts” refer to the nut-like hardness of the cookie, but there are no nuts in the recipe, which includes gingerbread spices (anise, cloves, nutmeg), pepper and citron. The black pepper adds to the spiciness without adding heat. Today is also Festivus Day and Roots Day.
