The Neshaminy School Board announced Monday, Dec. 3 that the last day of school for students will now be June 21, 2013. It was originally scheduled for June 20. Students will also now be in school March 6 and June 20, which were supposed to be staff development days. School will also be in session May 21 when school would normally be closed for Election Day. Students, staff and parents of Samuel Everitt and Albert Schweitzer elementary schools worked to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy. Samuel Everitt’s entrance foyer was filled with an enormous amount of donated food items that came from the school's families and staff. Many local food pantry shelves were depleted due to the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy. Over a three day period, canned and boxed non perishable food items were brought in and placed in large boxes. Neshaminy School District schools will reopen Monday, Nov. 5 for students and teachers following Hurricane Sandy. District officials announced last weekend that the schools would be closed Monday and Tuesday in anticipation of Hurricane Sandy causing flooding, damage and power outages. Schools remained closed the rest of the week due to ongoing power outages throughout the district. Many residents in the Neshaminy School District are still waiting for PECO to restore their power that was knocked out by the effects of Hurricane Sandy. In order to help those residents, the Neshaminy School District is opening up two of its middle schools for hot showers and cell phone charging. Hurricane Sandy came through the area and ripped down trees and knocked down power lines. Because of this, power outages have been widespread across the tri-state area. In Bucks County alone 119,000 customers still didn't have power at noon Thursdayn and 4,096 customers in Lower Southampton are still without power. Many parts of the township are still in the dark and a number of Lower Southampton Patch Facebook users said they still have yet to see PECO crews in their neighborhood. Hurricane Sandy knocked down trees and power lines, leaving Lower Southampton residents without power. Fire Marshal Bill Oettinger said that about 4,096 customers in Lower Southampton are still without power. And as of noon Thursday, about 119,000 customers across Bucks County still don't have power. Hurricane Sandy may bring several inches of heavy rain, sustained winds up to 45 miles per hour and wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour, throughout Bucks County, according to The National Weather Service. And with wind gusts and heavy rain comes downed trees and power lines and flooding. Hurricane Sandy's path left trees down, power lines down and most of Lower Southampton's residents without power. Due to the damage, the township is still in a state of emergency. Residents that had damage done to their property are being urged to contact the fire marshal's office to report it if they haven't already. Call 215-357-7300 ext. 349. Tuesday evening, PECO crews were out in Lower Southampton assessing the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy. According to township Fire Marshal Bill Oettinger, when PECO tried to turn the power back on along the Brownsville Road area a few fires broke out. "There were a couple of brush fire calls and a reported house fire after they tried to turn the ower back on," Oettinger said. Lower Southampton Township offiicials have decided to reschedule Halloween and trick-or-treating to Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012. With the majority of Lower Southampton residents still without power, downed power lines and trees caused by Hurricane Sandy, officials decided that it was just not safe for children to go trick-or-treating tonight. While there weren't any injuries or flooding in Lower Southampton, the amount of damage caused by Hurricane Sandy "wasn't expected" by township officials. Fire Marshal Bill Oettinger told Patch there were numerous trees down and on top of houses throughout Lower Southampton and there was debris all over the place.  "I wasn’t expecting this much damage. Due to the dangerous wind speeds associated with Hurricane Sandy, beginning at 10 a.m. Monday, the PennDOT and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission will temporarily reduce the speed limit to 45 mph and restrict certain types of vehicles on some southeast Pennsylvania roadways.   With Hurricane Sandy predicted to hit us hard today, losing power is a threat.  The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service prepared a fact sheet for keeping food safe during an emergency, including losing power. The USDA says to "keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to maintain the cold temperature." But, the refrigerator will only keep food safely cold for about four hours if unopened during a power outage, according to the USDA. Hundreds of PECO staff are at the ready should Hurricane Sandy pummel the region, knocking out power.  However, according to news posted to Lower Southampton Township's website, PECO is estimating that power restorations stemming from a "direct hit," could warrant a "multi-day restoration." The company said it is prepared to bring in additional crews from its sister utility ComEd in Chicago and from as far away as Tennessee, Kentucky, Louisiana and Mississippi to support storm restoration efforts.
